Alexis Bittar is one of America’s most celebrated jewelry designers, renowned for transforming hand-carved Lucite into a luxury fashion statement and building one of the most recognizable contemporary jewelry brands in the world. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Bittar grew up surrounded by antiques and collectibles, which inspired his appreciation for craftsmanship, artistry, and design from an early age.
As a teenager, Bittar sold vintage jewelry and clothing on the streets of New York City, developing an entrepreneurial spirit and a deep understanding of fashion. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he began creating his own jewelry designs, experimenting with Lucite and developing the sculptural aesthetic that would become his signature. Working from a small apartment, he hand-carved jewelry pieces that quickly attracted attention for their innovative design and artistic quality.
A breakthrough came in 1992 when Dawn Mello, then Fashion Director of Bergdorf Goodman, discovered Bittar’s work and introduced his collection to luxury retail audiences. His jewelry soon appeared at prestigious retailers including Bergdorf Goodman, Harrods, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Isetan, helping establish Alexis Bittar as a global luxury accessories brand.
Throughout his career, Bittar has collaborated with leading fashion houses and designers, including Burberry, Michael Kors, Jeremy Scott, Mugler, Phillip Lim, and Patricia Field. His designs have been featured in major fashion publications and worn by influential figures such as Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Iris Apfel, Meghan Markle, Dua Lipa, and Megan Thee Stallion.
In 2010, Bittar received one of fashion’s highest honors when he was named CFDA Accessory Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. After selling his company in 2015, Bittar stepped away from the brand before reacquiring it in 2020 following the bankruptcy of Brooks Brothers.
